SOUTHWESTERN AREA WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT BOARD WORKFORCE INVESTMENT ACT
(WIA) YOUTH
WORK EXPERIENCE POLICY

Applicability:
Southwestern Area Workforce Development Board (SAWDB) providers of Workforce Investment Act (WIA) youth training and employment services.
Purpose
To provide WIA eligible youth participants who are at risk of dropping out or have dropped out of school with guidance and instruction concerning the Workforce Investment Act.
Background
The Workforce Investment Act Chapter 4 and the Federal Register Part 664 states that the WIA youth program will provide to eligible youth, effective and comprehensive activities, including a variety of options for improving educational and skill competencies which shall include but not be limited to: mentoring, training, supportive services, incentives for recognition and achievement, leadership, development, decision-making, citizenship, financial literacy and community services.

Action
To require that within
a five year period , a youth participant in WIA can be enrolled no longer than
a maximum of two years. The SAWDB has determined that the following
criteria must be adhered to:
Youth providers will
emphasize work experience to:
Those participants 16-21 years old,
Who are in school at risk of
dropping out or that have dropped out, and
Those youth 19-21 years old who are
out of school.
The maximum work experience hours within 1 year will be up to 360 hours and the maximum education attainment that may or may not be paid will be 280 hours (paid educational attainment must be included in the providers’ contract).
The 1 year/360 hours of work experience will begin on the date of first work experience.
